I’d like to take a moment to welcome the latest edition to The House Of Stuff Halloween Film Festival gang, The Pouty Princess. The Princess is more than a little younger than me so she’s bringing a more contemporary perspective to the festival as you can tell by her initial recommendation, Saw. I saw Saw in the theater when it came out, but I didn’t see Saw again, so I was happy to add it to this year’s festival.
I seemed to remember the movie being kind of grizzly so I figured it would be a good idea to pare the movie with an appropriate bottle of wine. I chose the 2013 Zinfandel from Big White House Winery, located right here in Livermore. The Zin has a rich full bodied flavor that seemed like it would complement the expected blood and gore. Not only that but the woman on the label has the look of a serial killer’s victim.
Actually, Saw wasn’t as gross as I remembered or maybe movies have gotten grosser since them and I’m getting used to it. In either case the film definitely held my interest. The two victims find themselves trapped in a disgustingly dirty room filled with clues and puzzles that they try to solve in the hope of escaping. The villain proved to be always one step ahead of the victims and two steps ahead of me.
Although the villains identity caught me by surprise, I’d have to say that Saw reached a new low when it comes to the amount of screen time a culprit is given before being revealed. Other than the ending, I enjoyed the film enough that I’m considering adding a Saw-athon to this year’s film festival. I haven’t seen any of the 6 sequels and Netflix has them all so stay tuned.
